Women Empowerment in South Africa – The Heart of Our Work at Izindlovu Fund

Women empowerment in conservation at Izindlovu Fund

At the Izindlovu Fund, we believe that empowering women is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen communities and protect nature. Across many African communities, women are the caregivers, educators, and pillars of family life. When women are supported, entire communities benefit — and that is why women empowerment is a central part of our mission.

The Black Mambas – Rangers, Role Models, Leaders

We proudly support the incredible female rangers of the Black Mambas Anti-Poaching Unit. As the world's first all-female anti-poaching unit, the Black Mambas not only protect wildlife but also serve as role models in their communities. Many of these women come from nearby villages, and their work demonstrates that women can lead, protect, and inspire the next generation.

Their presence creates pride and opportunity within local communities while safeguarding endangered wildlife. The Black Mambas show every day that strength, courage, and dedication have no gender.

The Jabuladies – Nurturing Elephants with Care and Compassion

We also support the Jabuladies, the dedicated female caregivers working with elephants at HERD Trust. These women provide daily care, compassion, and stability to orphaned elephants — many of whom have experienced trauma and loss. Their work reflects the nurturing strength that women bring both to their families and to wildlife conservation.

Just as the matriarch leads the elephant herd, the Jabuladies bring wisdom, patience, and love to the young elephants in their care.

Investing in the Next Generation of Female Conservationists

Beyond conservation work in the field, we invest in the future generation of women and girls through our wildlife education initiatives together with Bush Babies Environmental Education. Through this programme we support young female students, helping them discover opportunities in conservation, science, and environmental leadership.

Every girl who learns about the natural world today could become a ranger, researcher, educator, or advocate tomorrow. We believe in nurturing that spark.

The Grannies – Keepers of Community Wisdom

Our support also reaches the grannies of the communities, who play a vital role in passing down knowledge, values, and cultural wisdom. These women are often the backbone of community life, caring for grandchildren and keeping traditions alive across generations.

They are quiet pillars of strength — and they deserve to be seen and supported.

Women at the Heart of Conservation

From female rangers protecting wildlife, to caregivers nurturing elephants, to students discovering their potential — women are at the heart of conservation and community resilience.

At Izindlovu Fund, we believe that when women thrive, nature and communities thrive together. 🐘🌿
