Herd

Elephant Conservation
Help us cover the continuous running costs of the Jabulani Elephants, a unique herd for integrating orphans and the HERD elephant orphanage. The unusual family structure of the Jabulani Herd, the majority of which are orphans themselves, is a unique solution for orphaned baby elephants that vitally need to find a second herd.

CHALLENGE

The HERD elephants are a very special herd. It is a group that has been assembled over the years by bringing together orphaned elephants. A wild herd of elephants will never accept a strange elephant. But this herd is different. They seem to understand their origins and have demonstrated several times over the years that they do have an open mind to take in other orphaned elephants.

Because this herd can be used to integrate found orphan elephants, it is of great importance. But the maintenance and care of this herd requires a lot of time and money.

SOLUTION

HERD elephants live as freely as possible on a 13,000-acre property. They are guarded and monitored daily by a group of caretakers. They can also get close to the nursery, where they get to know the little orphan elephants that are being rescued and cared for by HERD. This facilitates their integration later on. And this involves a lot of expense, but because this herd has so much potential, it should not be lost.

LONG-TERM IMPACT

This unique herd of elephants is indispensable in the context of the elephant orphanage HERD. Thanks to this herd, reintegration is possible and hopefully many more young orphaned elephants can be saved in the future.

We rely on incredible people like you to keep us going. Every cent counts, and no contribution is too small. HERD’s running costs all come from public funding to take us from month to month, so we really appreciate your support.

Environmental Education
Elephant & rhino conservation also involves human environment education as we both share the same land and nature. Moreover, as more and more wildlife and elephant habitats are used for human development, educating the future generation about environmental conservation is crucial.
